Careers Under Anesthesia 

Anesthesiologist

This is what most people think of when they think about anesthesiology. An anesthesiologist is a doctor who specializes in anesthesiology. They make all anesthesia-related descisions such as what the best anesthesia plan would be for the patient, what type of surgery that they should perform, and what anesthesia would best manage actue postoperative, chronic, or cancer pain. Anesthesiologists are also responsible for the wellbeing and safety of the patient, which includes performing the patient's preopertive assessment, managing any pain after surgery, and what medications the patient is on. They also manage cardiac and respiratory resuscitation, respiratory therapy, and blood tranfusion therapies. An anesthesiologist's responsibilties may also extend past surgery, such as stabilizing critcally ill or injured patients in intensive care units. 


Physician Anesthesiologist

A physician anesthesiologist is a highly skilled medial doctor that specializes in anesthesiology. They are the director and the most qualified member of the anesthesia care team. They are responsible for the well-being and safety of the patient before, during, and after surgery, meaning that they oversee the patient's preoperative assessment and the patient post-operation. The physician anesthesiologist also manages acute postoperative pain, chronic and cancer pain, cardiac and respiratory resuscitation, blood transfusion therapies, and respiratory therapy. 


Anesthesiologist Assistant 

An anesthesiologist assistant is a highly skilled health profession that is under the supervision of a licensed anesthesiologist. They may implement anesthesia care plans, but opperate exclusively within an anesthesia care team and may not pracitce outside the field of anesthesia or apart from a licensed anesthesiologist.


Nurse Anesthetist

A nurse anesthetist is a nurse that has completed the accredited nurse anesthesia training program. They are classified as a non-physician anesthetists, but they still specialize in anesthesia and participare in the adminsitration of anesthesia. 


Anesthesia Technician

An anesthesia technician is not a doctor or a nurse, but they support the work done by anesthesia personnel. They manage the anesthesia equipment and their maintenace, which includes cleaning, sterilizing, assembling, calibrating, testing, troubleshooting, requisitioning, and the recording of any inspections that are done. Anesthesia technicians operate a varitey of mechanical, pneumatic, and electronic equipment in order to monitor, evaluate and manage the patient. 


Certified Anesthesia Technician

A certified anesthesia technician is an anesthesia technican who has completed the examination requirements established by the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicans. They are a crucial member of he anesthesia patient care team. 


Certified Anesthesia Technologist

A certified anesthesia technologist is a technician who has completed both the Certified Anesthesia Technician and Technologist Examination. 


Anesthesia Care Team

An anesthesia care team is a group of non-physician anesthesia providers and/or resident physicians in training that are supervised by a physician anesthesiologist. The physician anesthesiologist is responsible for the management of team personnel, the management of anesthesia, the patient's preanesthetic evaluation, prescribing an anesthetic plan, the patient's postanesthetic care, and any anesthesia consuations.
